Red Gate Software Releases ANTS Performance Profiler 7.3, First Profiler to Join the Dots Behind ASP.NET Performance Problems

Profiles .NET code performance alongside database calls and shows which HTTP request triggered each piece of code

Red Gate Software has released ANTS Performance Profiler 7.3, the first profiler to tie together code performance, database performance, and HTTP requests.

In a single view, the tool allows ASP.NET developers to relate poor performance in their application to specific lines of code and database requests, and check which of the two is causing the problem.

"Developers usually have to jump between profilers to see everything that's happening in an ASP.NET application," says Elizabeth Ayer, Product Manager at Red Gate.

"ANTS Performance Profiler 7.3 puts a stop to that. You get everything in one place, making it much simpler and quicker to diagnose and fix problems."

Grouping .NET code and database calls by HTTP request provides a picture of everything that happens in the code when a specific activity, such as a search, takes place in an application.

The profiler provides hit counts and timings for each piece of code and database call, so users can see where most time is being spent, and which areas of their application may need optimization.

The ability to see in one view how database queries are called from your .NET code is a unique feature among .NET profilers. ANTS Performance Profiler currently supports local, remote, and cloud-based SQL Server and Oracle databases.

"It's an excellent piece of engineering. I was amazed to see how easily we were able to optimize messaging speed from 1200 messages per second to 5700," says Pushpraj Rahul, a user of the Early Access Program.

"As a long time user, I've integrated the profiler into my entire development process. It has truly helped us write better performing applications from the beginning. The recent release with exposure to SQL statements makes that even more true," says Mitchel Sellers, a Microsoft C# MVP and CEO of IowaComputerGurus.

Free trial available

Developers can try the latest release for themselves with a 14-day free trial, available from www.red-gate.com/antsperformanceprofiler

Quartet FS ActivePivot Support Added to Syncfusion Business Intelligence Studio

Quartet FS partnership offers developers a way to visualize ActivePivot data within their .NET applications

Syncfusion, Inc., a leading provider of .NET components for Windows development, announced a partnership with in-memory analytics technology provider Quartet FS. Syncfusion has added support for Quartet FS' ActivePivot platform to its Essential Studio Business Intelligence Edition.

Quartet FS offers clients a clear picture of their business in real-time, by tracking ongoing activity and events and drawing on the right information to make informed decisions faster and with greater confidence. Quartet FS' product ActivePivot is a real-time, in-memory analytics platform, which provides instant insight into complex and dynamic data for timely business decisions.

Syncfusion, with built-in support for ActivePivot, provides a powerful .NET front-end with its business intelligence components - OlapClient, OlapChart, and OlapGrid - which are available across different platforms: ASP.NET, WPF and Silverlight.

"Quartet FS' ActivePivot engine is widely used for in-memory analytics. Now, developers using Syncfusion's business intelligence studio can build cutting-edge information portals that take advantage of the data analytics offered by the ActivePivot platform," said Georges Bory, co-founder and managing director at Quartet FS.

Syncfusion business intelligence components support Quartet FS' ActivePivot server and enable business users to process ActivePivot server databases with only a valid user name, passed through a XMLA service, across the following platforms: ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, WPF and Silverlight. So, the data can now be visualized in desktop applications.

A technical white paper entitled, Active Pivot Data Visualization Using Syncfusion Essential BI, is available and outlines how to incorporate ActivePivot data into custom .NET applications.

Telerik Adds Tablet Support to Kendo UI HTML5, JavaScript Tool

Telerik announced that its Kendo UI framework for building HTML5 and JavaScript mobile apps and sites now supports both tablet app development and server-side ASP.NET MVC development.

Telerik, a maker of application development software, has announced a major update of its Kendo UI, a unified framework for building HTML5 and JavaScript mobile apps and sites.

This release includes a set of controls and widgets for creating rich iPad user interfaces, as well as the first in a series of server-side wrappers to enable developers to incorporate and configure Kendo UI via familiar server-side programming.

On July 11, Telerik announced Kendo UI Complete, a collection of Web, DataViz and management tools for professional software developers.

In an attempt to avoid fragmentation, more developers are focusing on Web standards such as HTML5 and JavaScript to build software that can run anywhere and reach the largest possible audience. Kendo UI’s unified framework incorporates adaptive rendering capabilities and leverages the latest in CSS3, HTML5 and JavaScript Web standards to automatically adapt a mobile app’s native look-and-feel on any smartphone and tablet device, while delivering broad support for all major browsers.

“With this release, Kendo UI moves beyond mobile phones to help developers create experiences with HTML5 that look native on the iPad and other tablets,” Todd Anglin, vice president of HTML5 Web and Mobile Tools at Telerik, said in a statement. “In addition, we’ve added important updates across the Kendo UI framework, including the first in a series of server-side wrappers that further equip developers to quickly and cost effectively create advanced apps and mobile sites with HTML5 and JavaScript.”

According to IDC, more than 107 million tablets will ship this year, with nearly two-thirds of those expected to be iPads. By adding iPad-specific widgets to Kendo UI Mobile, the company provides developers with a streamlined way to build native-like apps leveraging HTML5 for the market’s No. 1 tablet.

HTML5 is quickly becoming the dominant cross-platform runtime, with ABI Research forecasting the installed base for mobile devices with HTML5 to grow from approximately 500 million in 2011, to more than 2.1 billion in 2016. Gartner further forecasts that worldwide tablet sales will grow by 98 percent in 2012 to 119 million units.

Kendo UI Mobile already helps developers build HTML5 or JavaScript apps that automatically transform to the native look-and-feel of iOS, Android and BlackBerry. With this update, developers can use Kendo Mobile UI’s adaptive rendering to target multiple phone and tablet platforms with a single UI code base, thus eliminating the traditional challenges that developers face of manually researching and then combining all the plug-ins and frameworks and libraries needed to build mobile apps.

This new release also adds server-side helpers for ASP.NET MVC, enabling developers to incorporate and configure Kendo UI via familiar server-side programming, while still producing apps that benefit from the client-side power of Kendo UI and HTML5. While Kendo UI works with any server-side technology, some developers are less comfortable in JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), but feel very capable when working inside a server-side language. These wrappers ensure that developers who prefer to build apps from their own server-side language can do so quickly.

Moreover, developers using the new ASP.NET MVC wrappers can take full advantage of server-side framework features and coding conveniences, while targeting both desktop and mobile devices using the cross-platform power of modern HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript. Kendo UI Complete for ASP.NET MVC is the first of what the company plans to be a collection of server-side helpers for different platforms, including Java and PHP, all designed to maximize developer productivity with HTML5.

In addition to the new iPad widgets and server wrappers, there are updates across the entire Kendo UI framework, including new and improved widgets and charts in Kendo UI Web and DataViz, enabling the presentation of rich, touch-aware visual information on any browser and any device.

There are new Popover and Split View controls, as well as Action Sheet and Modal View widgets for Kendo UI Mobile. Telerik added new Donut (or torus) and Bubble chart types, as well as date axis support and additional arrow types for the Radial Gauge in Kendo UI DataViz. And the company added a combined DateTimePicker widget, column reordering and resizing on the Grid, and support for hierarchical and relational data in the DataSource for Kendo UI Web.

Beta Enhances dtSearch® Document Filters to Display Highlighted Hits in Context with Document Images (as well as Text) in Popular "Office" and Email Formats

dtSearch Corp., a leading supplier of enterprise and developer text retrieval along with document filters, announces beta testing of Version 7.70 of the dtSearch product line.  The new version adds multiple improvements to the document filters spanning the dtSearch product line.  For customers in need of data parsing, conversion and extraction only, the dtSearch Engine APIs (native 64-bit/32-bit, Win/Linux C++, Java and .NET through 4.x) also make the document filters available for separate OEM licensing.

Document Filters.  dtSearch's proprietary document filters support a broad range of data types (many of which already include combined image and text support):

"Office" documents:  MS Office, OpenOffice, RTF, PDF, etc.; the beta also adds support for Japanese Ichitaro documents
Emails:  MS Exchange, Outlook, Thunderbird, etc., all with nested attachments
Compression formats:  ZIP, RAR, GZIP/TAR, etc.
Web-ready data:  HTML, XML/XSL and PDF—all already with full image (in addition to text) support
Dynamic data:  PHP, ASP.NET, SharePoint, etc.— all already with full image (in addition to text) support
Databases:  SQL including BLOB data (through the dtSearch Engine APIs), MS Access, XBASE, XML, CSV, etc.
The document filters support parsing of all of the above data types as well as text extraction and/or conversion to HTML as required for browser display with highlighted hits.

Embedded Image Enhancements.  The new beta extends the document filters to add image support to Word (.doc/.docx), PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx), Excel, (.xls/.xlsx), Access (.mdb/accdb), RTF, and email files including Thunderbird (mbox/.eml), and Outlook (.pst/.msg) files.  The beta displays these formats showing highlighted hits in context with both text and now images.

Multi-Level Nested File Enhancements.  The dtSearch document filters also support documents and images in multi-level nested configurations.  For example, the beta would support not only viewing images in an email file, but also images in a PowerPoint embedded in a Word document attached as a zipped file to an email message.  A new "object extraction" API lets developers navigate through the structure of each embedded object as a hierarchy, and optionally extract each object.

Spider.  The Spider works with local and remote, static and dynamic web content.  Hit-highlighted searching can span any level of site depth, across any number of public and private or secure sites, including support for log-ins and forms-based authentication.  The Spider is built into the dtSearch product line, and accessible through a .NET API for programmers.

Terabyte Indexer.  dtSearch enterprise and developer products can index over a terabyte of text in a single index, spanning directories, databases, online data, and emails.  The products can create an unlimited number of indexes, and simultaneously search them.  Indexed search time is typically less than a second, even across terabytes of data.  Online indexed searching operates in a "stateless" environment, supporting unlimited concurrent search threads.

Search Options.  The dtSearch product line includes 25+ full-text and fielded data search types, including special forensics search options.  dtSearch products offer federated or distributed searching with integrated relevancy ranking across any number of different data repositories.  The dtSearch Engine APIs also support faceted searching and other advanced data classification objects.

International Language Support.  dtSearch products support all Unicode languages, including both right-to-left languages, and special Chinese/Japanese/Korean character options.

The dtSearch Engine.  The dtSearch Engine for Win & .NET and the dtSearch Engine for Linux make available dtSearch document filters and instant searching for a wide range of Internet, Intranet and other commercial applications.  The SDKs include native 64-bit and 32-bit C++, Java and .NET (through 4.x) APIs.  For over a hundred developer case studies, please see www.dtsearch.com/casestudies.html.  In addition to standard OEM licenses, the SDK also makes available the document filters for separate OEM licensing.

Other dtSearch Products.  The new release also covers dtSearch Web with Spider for quickly publishing instantly searchable data to an Internet or Intranet site, dtSearch Network with Spider for instantly searching across a network, dtSearch Publish for publishing searchable data to portable media, and dtSearch Desktop with Spider for desktop search.

Microsoft equips Windows Server for cloud duty

Microsoft is giving hosting providers and other organizations some tools for setting up their own Windows-based cloud systems using Microsoft Windows Server.

In conjunction with the company's Worldwide Partners Conference (WPC) this week in Toronto, Microsoft has released a preview set of technologies that can be installed on Windows Server that will allow organizations to set up virtual machines and Web hosting services that can then be offered as services, either internally or externally.

Microsoft initially developed all of the technologies to run its own Windows Azure cloud service, though it did not specify if this set of technologies would be fully interchangeable with Microsoft's own Azure service.

The pre-release preview of the technologies, called a Community Technology Preview (CTP), offers three sets of services that can be used by multiple parties. One is for hosting websites and Web applications. Another is for offering virtual machines, of either the Linux or Microsoft variety. The third set of services provides consumers with their own self-service portals.

On Monday, Microsoft announced that it would soon release Windows Server 2012, the next-generation Windows operating system for servers. Server manufacturers will get the OS in August and it will be generally available in September. During his keynote at WPC, Satya Nadella, who is president of Redmond's server and tools business, touted the release, along with these Azure-based technologies, as an alternative to VMware's cloud software.

For website hosting, the package runs not only Microsoft's own ASP (Active Server Pages) and ASP.NET frameworks, but also the open-source PHP Web programming language and Node.js JavaScript framework. It can run both Linux and Windows Server as virtual machines. The package also provides a portal, as well as an API (application programming interface), which both can be used to manage websites and virtual servers. It also includes the ability to provision services, keep track of billing, and add customized artwork and additional services.

The package requires at least four virtual machines running either Windows Server 2012, which will be available by September, or Windows Server 2008 R2. It requires System Center 2012 SP1, currently available only as a CTP. It also requires the updated .NET Framework, both versions 3.5 and 4. And it requires both SQL Server 2008 and MySQL 5.1.

There seems to be interest around offering Windows Server as a cloud service. Monday, hosting provider Rackspace announced that it would start offering Windows Server 2012 as a virtual machine service in the cloud sometime in the next few months.

Microsoft quietly bangs Bing's big bucks drum

Microsoft has created an angel investment fund for startups using its Bing.com search and ads platform.

The Bing Fund is described in a Microsoft job posting for a creative director as “a small team working with start-ups and accelerators to bring a wave of innovation to OSD”. OSD is Microsoft’s Online Services Division.

The creative director job post states that the Bing Fund, first reported here by Mary-Jo Foley, has a portfolio which includes "startups working on the web, desktop, mobile and console".

It appears that funding is not reserved for projects which solely use Microsoft technologies – a program manager job posting here says Microsoft wants engineers with broad experience of HTML, Javascript jQuery, the LAMP stack, AWS, Heroku, Google App Engine in addition to C#, ASP.NET and Windows Azure.

Heading up the Bing Fund is Rahul Sood, a former general manager for Microsoft’s Xbox and founder of PC maker VoodooPC, which was bought by Hewlett Packard in 2006. Sood joined Microsoft in 2011 and became a general manager at Xbox, which is part of Microsoft’s entertainment unit that is also home to Bing. Sood took over Bing Fund in March this year, according to his LinkedIn bio.

Microsoft hasn’t officially announced Bing Fund and everything seems to be in stealth mode. But there have been job postings, a cryptic Twitter feed – since the end of June – and now a website. A recent tweet from Sood suggests that his "new project" will launch in mid-July.

It's not unusual for tech companies to invest in startups to promote their platform or technologies: SAP, Intel and Google all run funds. Microsoft has run a programme called BizSpark under Silicon Valley veteran Dan’l Lewin since October 2008. BizSpark gives startups free access to Microsoft tools, technologies, and services and is open to private companies which are less than three years old and have less than $1m revenue. Microsoft claims more than 30,000 startups have joined the programme so far.

One beneficiary of BizSpark is IssueLive, co-founded by Bing Fund senior programme manager David Raskino.

Bing, along with Microsoft's online services business, are the weakest performing areas of Redmond’s empire. Despite pouring billions into building Bing, the business still earns Microsoft relatively little cash – $700m in the company’s most recent quarter – while it also reported a loss. The outlook is not great either: Microsoft just wrote off $6.2bn on the failed aQuantive acquisition from 2007, saying expectations for the future growth and profitability of OSD are lower than previous estimates.

Microsoft will likely use its annual Worldwide Partner Conference this week to rally both new and existing partners to Bing, asking them to build businesses and services on the platform. It wouldn't be the first time chief exec Steve Ballmer has begged partners to show Bing some love.
